PACIBER Overview


The Pacific Asian Consortium for International Business Education and Research (PACIBER) was created in 1988 as a consortium of 27 leading universities dedicated to bridging the gap by establishing linkages to promote international business education, research and exchange of information among faculty and students.


PACIBER stands as a forum for the exchange of ideas where members can network and learn from one another. Through faculty exchanges and other mutually beneficial alliances, member universities can raise the level of their business education programs to world class standards.

PACIBER 2011 Annual Meeting - Seoul Plaza Hotel, South Korea, July 1-4, 2011


The 2011 PACIBER annual meeting will be hosted by Sungkyunkwan University at the Seoul Plaza Hotel, commencing with the opening reception on July 1, 2011 (Friday) at 6PM and concluding with lunch on July 4, 2011 (Monday) at 1:30PM. The theme will be "The Transformed Global Economy - Transformations Within and Between Economies".


Topics include:

• Comparisons on the impacts of and recoveries from the financial crisis, within and between economies of various stages and sizes.
• Structural changes within and between economies.
• Changing impact of the BRIC countries.
• Change in the dynamics of global competitiveness.
• Shift from manufacturing to service.
• Shift from export oriented economies to domestic consumption.
• Increased emphasis on sustainability.
• Increased emphasis on the stakeholder model.
• Black Swan Theories.
• Contributions of Asian systems, theories, and paradigms.
• New business thinking.
• Impact on curriculum and research.
• Impacts of currency exchange changes (parity of the AUD and CAD, devaluation of the EUR, GBP, and USD).


Being hosted in South Korea, country specific topics of interest include:

• Korea's linkage and trade with the global economy.
• Current "transformations" that Korea is facing.


Keynote Address by Dr. EUH Yoon-Dae


Dr. EUH Yoon-Dae is a South Korean professor, financier, and advisor for the Korean government. He is currently Chairman of KB Financial Group, Korea’s second largest banking group.


A former President of Korea University (2003-2006), EUH served in various advisory roles for the Korean government. He was former Vice-Chair of the National Economic Advisory Council, Chairman of Advisory Board of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, on the Presidential Council on Nation Branding, and on the Public Fund Oversight Commission. He served as a Monetary Board Member of the Bank of Korea as well as a Board Member of the Korea Development Bank. From 1993 to 2004, he served as Policy Advisor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Chairman of the Steering Committee of Korea Investment Corporation (KIC), responsible for setting policies and reviewing management performance. EUH was founding President of the Korea Center for International Finance. He previously headed the Korean Academic Society of Business Administration and Korea Monetary and Finance Association.


Dr. Euh earned his B.A. and M.B.A. at Korea University, an M.B.A. at the Asian Institute of Management, and a Ph.D. in business administration at the University of Michigan. He has received honorary doctorate degrees at Yonsei University, Waseda University, Griffith University and Renmin University. EUH’s is widely published in the top tier finance and management journals .

Call for Papers


The PACIBER Research Committee encourages the submission of original research that analyzes any of the issues associated with "The Transformed Global Economy - Transformations Within and Between Economies", including, but not limited to the above topics.


Up to six papers will be presented. Some travel support is available. All papers will be reviewed by the PACIBER Research Committee. PACIBER Faculty Development Program - Seoul Plaza Hotel, South Korea, July 1, 2011


An optional PACIBER Faculty Development Program, "International Entrepreneurship", will precede the PACIBER Annual Meeting, beginning July 1 (Friday) from 8AM to 4PM.


Hosted by the University of Colorado and University of Hawaii, the International Entrepreneurship conference features keynote speaker Patricia McDougall, Ph.D., facilitator Manuel Serapio, Ph.D., and a site visit to a South Korean company showcasing entrepreneurship and innovation in a conglomerate (chaebol).


A special rate of US100 has been established for PACIBER annual meeting participants. Please forward this announcement to your colleagues, non-PACIBER faculty are also welcome, at US175 for early registration and US200 for regular registration.

Travel Information


You would fly into Incheon International Airport (ICN), located 60 - 80 minutes from the center of Seoul. While a Hotel Limousine is available at US140, most travelers opt for the airport limousine bus, run by Korean Airlines, available at airport curbside, Bus #6701 Seoul City Hall, making 1-2 stops at other hotels prior to reaching the Seoul Plaza, at a cost of US14. Taxi is also available, standard at est. US45, deluxe at est. US80.


Weather in Seoul during the summer is typically hot and humid. Dress at the PACIBER meeting is business casual.


The Seoul Plaza Hotel is located within a 15 minute walking distance of the following attractions; Namdaemun Market (traditional Korean marketplace), Myongdong (restaurant/bar and ladies fashion district), Namsan Tower (Viewing tower atop mountain park), Lotte Department Store (basement food court and upper floor restaurants), and Kyongbuk Palace.
